Monroe Middle School Band

Welcome to the Monroe Band

Monroe Middle School has a long history of being known for its fantastic bands and amazing band students! There are four different bands that students can participate in. Most Monroe students attend Sheldon High School after graduating from 8th grade and have the opportunity to participate in some of their amazing bands.

Beginning Band

The Beginning Band is for those students who are new to band or learning an instrument for the first time. Students do not need to have any previous musical experience. Most students take Beginning Band in sixth grade, though students in seventh or eighth grade are also welcome to join. In this band, students learn how to take care of an instrument, how to hold and make sound on an instrument, how to read music, how to develop good practice habits, and how to play together with a musical ensemble. The Beginning Band typically gives three concerts every year.

Intermediate Band

The Intermediate Band is for those students who have had a year of experience playing a band instrument. In this class, students will grow in their knowledge of music by learning, practicing, and performing more difficult pieces. In addition to giving three concerts throughout the year, the Intermediate Band typically goes on at least one field trip to a band festival, where they perform for adjudicators, listen to other bands perform, and have fun together outside of school.

Advanced Band

The Advanced Band is for those students who have had two years of experience, or are playing at a very high level and have the director's approval. This band focuses more attention on performing and preparing for band in high school. The Advanced Band typically goes on a couple of field trips to band festivals, participates in events with Sheldon High School, and has opportunities to work with professional musicians and conductors from the community and local universities.

Jazz Band

The Monroe Jazz Band meets before school. The music is advanced, so students need to have a year or two of experience before joining, and also are members of the Intermediate or Advanced Band. The Jazz Band is made up of saxophones (alto, tenor, baritone), trombones, trumpets, guitar, bass, piano, and drums. The Jazz Band learns how to play various styles, including swing, rock, and latin. They perform at numerous events throughout the year, including all Monroe concerts, a few jazz festivals, and community carnivals.

Meet the Director

Josh Dillow joined Monroe in the Fall of 2021 after teaching at Meadow View School in West Eugene for 17 years. Six of those years were also spent teaching at Prairie Mountain School. Prior to that he taught for two years at Westridge Middle School and Oakridge High School in Oakridge, Oregon. He graduated from George Fox University with his bachelors and masters degrees.

Bands under Josh's direction have been invited to perform at the Oregon Music Educator's Association conference and the Oregon School Board Association conference, and have won many awards at various music festivals.

Josh met his wife, Lisa, in college band. Together they have four children, a dog, a tadpole, and a mouse. He loves playing the trumpet and guitar, reading, hiking, and smiling.
